Alexandra writes…

You & Me & the Sea is an original song that was inspired by a moonlit romantic moment shared between my partner and I. The lyrics appeared during the date and so I had to quickly scribble them down! The following morning, I woke up with the basic melody already playing in my head. The song wrote itself really! I often find that inspiration grows into art once ideas are developed and so I immediately contacted Hovig (my song writing team) and we jammed to it.

I loved the depth of the piano but wanted a ukulele to be added too as it was a song set on the beach. This is when I asked Taniia, my good friend and house mate, to get involved and play with her ukulele. We then asked my brother George to play bass and our good friend Joel to play the drums as any catchy summer song needs a good rhythm and bass. We asked Alexa to get involved as we love her voice.

Originally, I had thought to have her sing it and me to do the harmonies however, as the song was a shared romantic moment for me and my partner – and because the song is dedicated to him – I finally decided to sing it myself with Alexa on harmonies. One of my favourite moments in jamming this song was when we decided to add a swing beat for the scatting section. I love the change in rhythm and the homage paid to my favourite time period. I always wanted something jazzy or funky and anachronistic, so I believe the basic hip hop chill beat makes it more modern and the scatting section adds an echo of an older era. The combination of these two times are a true reflection of me!
